Red sandalwood (pterocarpus soyauxii) is an excellent incense base material. Although it isn’t actually sandalwood, it makes a perfect base for any incense blend that includes resins but will work well in virtually any recipe.

I love red sandalwood because it has a very low scent. While yellow sandalwood offers a subtle, sweet scent, red sandalwood’s scent will disappear into the background while pushing your aromatics to the forefront. Red sandalwood can cause stains, so handle carefully.

Here’s a great recipe that uses Red Sandalwood:

4 teaspoons Red sandalwood

1/2 teaspoon clove

1/2 teaspoon powdered dragon’s blood resin

1/8 teaspoon guar gum or xanthan gum

Blend the dry ingredients and add water as needed (roughly 2 1/2 teaspoons) to form a smooth clay. Roll into cones, sticks, coils, or other forms.
