Gum Tragacanth

Tragacanth was the first gum binder I used when I started making incense. It is a brownish-white powder with no scent. It works just as well as guar gum or xanthan gum. Some incense makers prefer tragacanth, but I’ve never felt that it works better than other gum binders.

Incense makers are like most people, in that when they find something that works for them, they don’t like to mess with a successful formula. For some, tragacanth is the binder of choice. It is a food additive derived from plant mucilage.
